Slight wear around the top of saucer but otherwise excellent condition. Large cups and saucers, most of them from the 1980s but a couple from the 1960s. The latter have a few signs of wear otherwise all absolutely fine.

It is an unusual dish in that the runnels are a simple cross and there is a well at each end, offering uniformity and balance that is lacking in a single well version. The backstamp is SPODE impressed and a blue workman’s mark of two parallel lines with another slashed across in the form of a rudimentary cross. There are some glazing blemishes occuring in manufacture, pitting and gritting, but nothing major. The glaze is sound and has that lovely pearly cobalt sheen to it. The two feet have been succesfully drilled at some stage so this platter may be easily hung on the wall.

Around 1822 Spode introduced a new mix of china which they called “new Stone”. This white ceramic marked a step towards more ornate styles and deigns that were inspired by other cultures which continued after 1833 when the business was bought by Copeland and Garrett. There are thousands of different patterns out there according to Collectors Weekly – and the porcelain itself is high quality, so it’s not as rare as you might think. Marks on Copeland Spode are impressed, painted or transfer printed onto individual pieces. Some pieces also have a workman’s mark in addition to the company’s mark from the Spode factory that ran from 1780 to 1833.
